Many years ago, I worked on a server application that had to update and refresh Excel workbooks. I was going to try to explain it a little bit myself when I decided to do a quick search. Lo and behold, I found an old (2008) article from Jessica Moss. I'm certain there isn't anything I could tell you that she can't. Here's a link to the article. Please let us know if that helps or if you have additional or different questions. Good luck. http://jessicammoss.blogspot.com/2008/10/manipulating-excel-spreadsheets-in-ssis.html

I suggest adding the reference to the solution. She only edited the XML because she couldn't find the DLL to reference. Try this in your script task: Right-click on References. Select the Extensions assembly type. Scroll down, and you should find Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel. If you have more than one, choose the version that is most appropriate for your needs. Good luck.
