What are people's experiences of running a SQL Server cluster with shared storage?
Very good. The systems I made at the last company I worked for were incredibly reliable, we used a variety of SANs mostly from HP (MSA1000 I think), IBM or EMC/Dell (who you can get to cut their prices by 50% virtually all the time).
The only time there was a problem was when there was a drive failure in one of the arrays, and the ops guys hadn't noted down the right serial number from the chassis. So they decided to pull it out of the rack mid operation. Which would have been OK, if they had screwed the data connector in at the back. So basically half of the array disappeared, which SQL Server didn't like very much. Then it turned out the backups hadn't been tested. Because they'd forgotten to take any (!).
I am so glad I don't work there any more.
