Can we make use of log shipping and replication in SQL Server hosted in Hyper V VM

Hi we have an SQL Server running under Hyper V VM and we are planning to make use of log shipping and replication for other availability purposes. But as per Microsoft, they wont support when we enable these HA options in SQL Server running under HyperV. Any of you running your production database servers under Hyper V VM. Thanks,

Do you have that in writing that MS won't support that? A Link? I would find it hard to believe that they won't support those HA options under their own hypervisor.

Hi John, the following support article mentioned that If multiple SQL Server virtual machines are tightly coupled with one another, individual virtual machines can fail over to the disaster recovery site, but SQL Server high availability features need to be removed and reconfigured. For this reason, the following SQL Server features are not supported on Hyper-V Replica: availability groups, database mirroring, fail over cluster instances, log shipping, and replication. I believe these options are not supported only in replica not the primary virtual machine in primary site. In this case we need to reconfigure the replication and log shipping in replica site when fail over happens. Please correct/guide me if i am wrong. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/956893 Thanks,

So yes, if you are using the Hyper-V Replica HA option to replicate the actual VM itself, then no you can't not use those particular features of SQL Server. I read that as Hyper-V Replica pertains to both the primary as well as the replica copy of the VM. This is enabled on the hyper visor not within the VM itself. However, if you are not using that HA feature of Hyper-V, then yes you should be able to use log shipping, mirroring, etc within Hyper-V. Hope that helps. Disclaime: I have little Hyper-V experience so further research will be warranted.
