SQL 2008 R2 SP3 Install Error

Good morning,

Over the weekend, I attempted to install service pack 3 onto a SQL 2008 R2 instance. The instance was already at SP2. During the install, I'm getting the below error message.

Prior to receiving this error message, I did get a number of messages about missing files in the installer cache, which I believe I've resolved. For that issue, I used information from here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/969052#Script

This is the same executable that I've used several times to patch other instances without issue. I've tried extracting all of the files and running setup, no joy. I've checked event viewer on the box and I wasn't able to locate anything useful. In looking at the bootstrap log, I did find this nugget:

After looking at the bootstrap error, I attempted to manually install the MSI that is specified in the line just above the error. When I attempted that, I get this error:

0:Watson 1:1304 2:StreamSupportFiles 3:streamBinaryToDisk 4:5 5:e:\sql10_main_t\sql\setup\darwin\sqlcastub\streamca.cpp 6:238 7:sqlcastub.dll 8:sqlrun.msi

This was accompanied by an "Access Denied" error as well. Please forgive the text, it wouldn't allow me to post more than 2 screen shots. It's also worth noting that the directory specified above doesn't exist.

I've done several google searches and either my googlefu is weak or I'm not looking in the right places.

Anybody else run across this? If so, what was the fix?

Thanks in advance on any guidance you can provide.

I was able to resolve the issue and documented it here: http://sqlrus.com/2015/05/sql-server-2008-r2-sp3-install-errors/
