This is explained quite clearly in [this documentation][1]. To summarise, it's a Windows service, provided as part of SQL Server, which allows SQL servers to find instances which are not listening on the standard port. If it's not running, and your server isn't on the default port then you will need to know the port/pipe and configure it in your connection string if SQL Server Browser isn't running. If that doesn't help, can you advise what aspects of the document or my explanation are unclear, and we can try to clarify for you?
