SQL DBA Career
Hi All of you, Currently i am working as senior Software Engineer and also do some parts of dba task like backup,job scheduling,ETL(ssis).and i want to move my full career in DBA. Please suggest me and guide me how can i prepare for the DBA job interviews and also interesting to take certification for DBA. Please do needful. I am full of confusion from where i can start to grow career in DBA. Thankyou

When you say some part of DBA, **include Backup and JOb scheduling**, that itself is one of the most important and responsible task of being DBA. Its not only about just DATABASES, its far more than that. Its very important you plan you're path and start focusing to get the plan right. To improve and to learn along with good experience will enhance you. Attend seminars, conferences, read blogs/websites for same, self study.Simple the more you dive deep the more you learn. Also, per my experience DBA not only revolves around SQL, it also requires understanding of hardware, os system requirements, operating tools etc. For certifications, you can opt as beginner level on Microsoft learning page. Read Craig Mullins book, Database Administration. Read Tom Larocks book, Becoming a DBA Rockstar. Read Brad Mcgehee's book, How to Become an Exceptional DBA. Once you're done with those, you should know what's necessary.
You prepare for the interview by knowing your stuff. That's all. I don't have a list of questions for you study so you can skip the knowledge and understanding part of the job. That's fundamental. Here's a question I ask regularly, as a phone screen, before you get in the room for the real interview. If you can ace this, without looking stuff up, you might be ready to go. If you don't understand this, you should read those books. "What is the difference between a block and a deadlock?" Get that, you're ready.

FWIW, most folks interviewing a DBA candidate could care less about certifications unless you also have 3-5 years of experience to back it up. Anyone can get an exam cram and pass the test and because of that the certs don't count for much. Reading the books @grantfritchey listed is a fantastic start, also for extended learning Pluralsight has a lot of courses available on SQL Server from real world professionals. SimpleTalk has lots of ebooks you should take advantage of too. When interviewing don't be afraid to say "I don't Know". None of us can know everything. Show them you are eager to learn, have the aptitude to learn and you will do fine.
"I don't know, but here's what I'd do to find out..." is also a great answer. And I agree on the Certs. They might get you past HR, but no farther.
