How to be a production DBA?
I want to know the actual path which will help me to be a Production DBA. What are the certification I need to do and some book's name which will help me so much. Please help me out from this doubt.
Thanks to all. I am also a .NET developer. So I want to know from this position I want to be a DBA in Future. So I asked you people about that because, I did not decide in which way I need to go and which is the better way for me.
The primary path is experience. You need to work with databases and systems a lot in order to be placed in the position of trust that is the Production DBA. Generally the path is one of two, systems people who build computers and set up networks find themselves doing more and more data work until they eventually just make the jump and become DBAs. Or, developers who get deeper and deeper into the database and its internals until they make the leap (that's how I did it). Certifications will absolutely NOT make you into a Production DBA. I don't trust the Microsoft certification process. There are dumps online that allow you to memorize answers so that you can pass the test. As far as books go, there are tons and tons. The first I would recommend is "[Troubleshooting for the Accidental DBA][1]." I also like Craig Mullins book "[Database Administration][2]" for how it explains what the job is. Tom Larock has a great book on the job of a DBA, "[How to Become a Rockstar DBA][3]". You might also want to look at the video learning offered by [Pluralsight][4]. [1]:

Excellent answer, Grant. I completely agree that experience is key. Certification is helpful when trying to find a job because some organizations place value on them, but no amount of test cramming or even months of test preparation can ever take the place of years of valuable experience when the "what just happened?" or "why is that happening?" moments arise.
Read the book Accidental_DBA this is an awesome guide. I think if you were a developer it will be easy. I was a .net developer and now i am an SQL Server DBA
