SQL 2005 SP4 EE and SQL 2012 SP1 EE log ship to AG
SQL 2005 SP4 EE and SQL 2012 SP1 EE. SQL 2005 SP4 EE logshipping to SQL 2012 SP1 EE. Actively log shipping 1 VLDB to 4 secondary servers with the goal being migration to SQL 2012 and establishing AG with 1 primary replica, 1 synchronous read only replica, and 2 asynchronous replicas. The concern is making one of the log shipping targets the primarily replica. While log shipping is in place the AG wizard states "The database lacks a full database backup....Before you can add this database to an availability group you must perform a full backup." When we restore the last tran log backup with recovery to the database that will be the primary replica does this requirement go away? The other replicas will remain in in no recovery until the availability groups are established. Thanks in advance.
Hi Joe, if I understand you correctly, you want to drop one of the log shipping targets out of log shipping and make it the future primary in an AG setup. If that is the case, then yes, you would restore it to a fully operational state, then create a full backup to initialise the other future secondaries. At that point you will be able to make it the primary replica in an AG setup. What you will need to pay attention to is, that you are still running log shipping from your old system to the new one and no longer pushing any changes to the newly appointed AG primary. If this is planned for, then you are fine, otherwise you will have to think about what to do there to ensure any changes made in the log shipping setup are somehow replicated to the AG system. Good luck!
