Difference between Registered server and central management server?
Hi, I have been reading about registered servers ,so far it make sense to me that when we register a server under server group we would be able to execute same query on multiple servers simultaneously and we can export registered server information but i am wondering what information it contains when we export it to a file and what are the other advantages of registering servers, finally what is the difference between registered server and a Central management server? Thanks in Advance
Registered servers and Local server groups, that's a local list of servers that you maintain on your client computer. If you export your registered servers/local server group you get a xml file with all your server info, folder structure, username and password also if you like. If you wan't to share this just send it your colleagues and they can import it. The downside to this is that everyone has to maintain their own list of servers. The difference between a locally registered server and a central management server is that a central management server is maintained centrally, works the same way as local server groups but it is "installed" on one of your servers. So everyone connects to this "cms" and gets an up to date list with servers, instead of managing their own list. Another advantage of registered servers/central management is if you work with policy based management.
