Hmm. It's not a very informative error message! I can't tell you what's wrong but I can suggest a few lines of enquiry. Have you tried restarting your PC? Like any other software, SSMS can get into an inconsistent state. Before spending too much time on it: do you need to do this often? I would think not. In which case you can always do it from the SQL Configuration Manager or even the Services control panel app. Try looking in the SQL Agent error log, the SQL Server Error log, and the server's Event Viewer (in that order). It might tell you a bit more there. Have you been able to start the service this way before? Maybe you've set something up wrong. Have you (still) got sufficient permissions on the server? Can you control this service on other servers this way? Have you changed the version of SQL Server on the server or installed a different version of SSMS? They might be incompatible. Check the SQL Agent service account. Is it a domain account that could be locked out? Has its password been changed? Has somebody changed its permissions on the server?

Hi David, 1.Have you tried restarting your PC? Like any other software, SSMS can get into an inconsistent state. ANS:yes, i tried so many times my pc was restarted, but still its not working. 2.Before spending too much time on it: do you need to do this often? I would think not. In which case you can always do it from the SQL Configuration Manager or even the Services control panel app. ANS: Absolutely, i am not facing this problem often, but it was showing "unable to start sql server agent services" error. It was showing Agent XPs disable i am also enabled AgentXPs with using this code EXEC SP_CONFIGURE 'Agent XPs',1 GO RECONFIGURE but its not working 3.Try looking in the SQL Agent error log, the SQL Server Error log, and the server's Event Viewer (in that order). It might tell you a bit more there. ANS:2014-07-16 09:35:03 - ? [131] SQLSERVERAGENT service stopping due to a stop request from a user, process, or the OS... 2014-07-16 09:35:06 - ? [098] SQLServerAgent terminated (normally) I tried to all type of actions on this error but Agent not started. 4.Have you been able to start the service this way before? Maybe you've set something up wrong. Have you (still) got sufficient permissions on the server? ANS: Once again i checked all the services and server accounts all are fine and they having full permissions on those accounts. 5.Can you control this service on other servers this way? Have you changed the version of SQL Server on the server or installed a different version of SSMS? They might be incompatible. ANS: yes , i controlled all the services, i didn't change version of sql server and i didn't install different versions of SSMS. 6.Check the SQL Agent service account. Is it a domain account that could be locked out? Has its password been changed? Has somebody changed its permissions on the server? ANS: i checked all are perfect but Agent services are not stated. please help us. Thank You Chalapathi Sql DBA
