What is the best alternate option of xml data type

We have a requirement to design a table with xml column(s). This is to reduce the number of column in the table. 1. How good it is to design a table having xml data type? 2. Is there any better solution not to use xml data type? Regards, --Rudra

Whats the reason for wanting to reduce the number of columns? If you store multiple columns as a single XML data type then you make querying against that data a lot more difficult! If you need to store XML, store XML; if you need to store data, then store it as data
