Change Root Instance Directory during SQL 2008r2 Upgrade

Hi all, Got a server running SQL 2005, and I need to upgrade that to 2008. when I run the 2008r2 upgrade process, it shows me the correct instance name, but the root instance directory shows as **C**:\\program files(86)\\Microsoft SQL Server\\. For this server, those files are stored in **D**:\\program files(86)\\Microsoft SQL Server\\. I button to change the directory is grayed out. How can this be done? Thanks

Even though you may have specified D:\program files\.... during the previous install, certain shared components are in c:\program files(x86)\... regardless. You can't change that.

So I clicked next and let it install as it wanted to. when it was done, I noticed that I had both SQL 2005 tools and also SQL 2008. Then I'm guessing I have to go into 2008 and change the locations of the db's? or attach my program's db? then uninstall 2005?

Sounds like you installed a new instance rather than choosing to upgrade an existing instance. Was this by choice? If you detach and attach then the databases will go through a upgrade process and will not be able to be attached back to the 2005 instance. The compatibility mode will still be 9.0 and you would need to change that to 100 if need be. If you installed a named instance then any application pointed to the databases will most likely need to be updated to use the named instance and or new port for SQL. Please define what your true needs are and we can help. Is this production/dev/qa?
