AlwaysOn Availability Group listener

We are using .NET 4.0 and (SQL SERVER 2012) AlwaysOn Availability Group Listener for Connection and getting below error.

Exception occured while using ExecuteReader,

DbConnectionPool, GetConnection,

  • network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.)*

Is this a new AG (Availability Group) or an existing SQL box that has been up for awhile. Are there any other connections from the source server to this SQL instance or a new connection? If a new connection, validate that proper ports are open in the firewall. You can validate this by using telnet to connect to the SQL instance. If the telnet client is on your server, open a command prompt and type telnet ip_of_server port_number. For example "telnet 1433"

Are you trying to connect via IP or DNS name, ensure the DNS name resolves properly as well if you are using DNS name.
