Sql server 2005 system hangs after backup the database and before sending the confirmation email. This problem occurs randomly. The Back-up process consists of an incremental backup copy daily and one complete weekly the Sunday

In addition to the requests for error messages, can I also ask what you're using to do the backup?

Without an error message, it's hard to say. Guessing, I would think it's more likely that it's a problem caused by however you're sending the email rather than the backup process. I don't see backups causing system problems in the work I do. I would check the location where your backups are going to see if the backup completed. As @Ramesh 1 says, check the error logs, system, sql server and sql agent (three different logs). Can you query the system at all? Look at sys.dm_exec_requests to see if there are system processes blocked or waiting and understand what is causing them to stop.
