You are tracking the amount of free space on a disk in order to properly manage that disk and others to avoid running out of space and/or spending too much money on disks you don't need. You have to track the remaining space on disks. It's directly related to database space management, the amount of space that a database takes up on the disk. You're going to track growth over time in order to come up with targets when you're going to need to add new disks and create new file groups or move databases between disks or whatever remediation you're going to do in order to manage the disks and the space you have available.
