Upgrading sqlserver 2005 to sqlserver 2008R2

I read few articles on the process of upgrade and I would prefer to do side by side upgrade. I will be moving all datafiles as well as data from sqlserver 2005 to 2008R2 (different machine). I know I can either choose attach and detach or backup and restore on sqlserver 2008R2. Is there anything else that I am missing? Do I have to run any upgrade process on sqlserver 2008R2?

A lot of information can be placed here. One thing in particular that I can think of, have you considered using mirroring to make the side by side upgrade easier and faster?

My few points...

  • Build a Test instance
  • Apply latest service packs, and cumulative updates
  • Transfer the logins, jobs, SQL Server objects like linked server, backup device, DTS\SSIS packages and other maintenance plans.
  • Enable instant file initialization for SQL Server account. Set memory setting (min * max Meomory)
  • Restore the database.
  • Separate your tempdb, log, from data files.
  • Defragment your indexes, update your statistics.
  • Run DBCC UPDATEUSAGE, CHECKDB
  • Configure, replication, service broker (if any) and database mails and alerts and operators.
  • Test the application...
  • If everything is fine, setup your production server, repeat the above steps.
  • Configure database and business maintenance plans.
  • Load test, establish baselines on the production instance.
  • On the Dev\QA server check for any possibility to use the new development features of SQL Server 2008. If there is any chance, implement it and test and take to production.

New code box

There's a new way to format code on the site - the red speech bubble logo will automatically format T-SQL for you. The original code box is still there for XML, etc. More details here.
