federated databases - backup and maintenance

can anyone speak to the backup and maintenance of federated databases..?

backup and recovery scenarios - timing, etc

maintenance of one vs the second vs the third server

not really a direct question I know, I'm looking for someone who has had experience with them and can tell us some pros and cons, pitfalls to watch out for and sticky situations they have gotten out of.
