cognos vs ssrs, side by side comparision

Can we always use SSRS instead of cognos reports?
if not then why?
I have never worked on cognos just recently started googling around to see why congnos is needed sometime for reporting instead of SSRS

The bank where I was employed used SQL Server 2005 and SSRS as well as Cognos. Cognos was used more in the Data Warehouse environment because it was churning millions and millions of data or terabytes worth of data and the marketing team needed real time results as quick as possible.

We did a benchmark test and Cognos could churn out more data via reporting than SSRS could. We basically used the best of both breeds.

My last company I worked for migrated from SSRS to Cognos. Even though SSRS was capable of most specific situations, there were certain "Advanced" BI analytics that Cognos was able to do. I'm not exactly sure what though.

However, my manager was always against this move as he wanted to strictly to keep this a Microsoft workshop. Not sure if it was a carefully thought-out technical move or a dumb executive cost-saving move.

thanks, I googled around, it says almost similar stuff like cognos advanced ad hoc reports and better BI functanalities. So far SSRS and MDX has not failed me for requirements. will look little further at Cognos features.
