failed login attempts

Noticing several hundred random failed login attempts on my MSSQL Server Instance. These are fairly obvious to me as attacks as I know the IP ranges of users that are allowed access to the sql server. I have to allow remote access to this particular server instance for development purposes. I am wondering if there is anything I have overlooked in setting up the security aside from the basics.

Remember you could configure your firewall to limit the IP ranges that can get in (or have the sysadmin do it for you.)
