I guess really it comes down to what you want to get out of the certification. If you want to use it as an excuse to learn, then study as much as you can. Personally I prefer to spend my time learning things that are relevant to my job, rather than outlying areas that I might only be studying to be able to get past an exam.

I prefer the self-paced approach. Install Developers edition on a server. Then work through the exercises and practice problems. After that, try to get as much hands-on practice with the product as you study.

The study books I've purchased in the past have just been to get the included practice exam, which matches my style pretty well. I'd imagine that somebody who takes the study-the-chapters-and-work-through-the-provided-exercises approach would find the book useful as well.
