Partition Backups

Is there a way to back up a partition in 2008? Or do you just align a partition with a filegroup?

I'm looking at multiple partitions on an "archive" filegroup but may want to back up a given partition to restore the data in a test environment.

More filegroups = more files = more management.

Align it with a filegroup. Then perform the backup on the filegroup.
