Ask SSC has had an upgrade. While nothing will look very different yet, a lot has changed behind the scenes. The site should be faster and more stable. If you find anything that’s not working, please respond to this thread or use the meta-askssc tag to report anything you come across. The new platform gives us more freedom to grant powers according to karma levels, so some of you will find that you now have moderation powers you didn’t have before. Users with especially high karma should find that they can now approve and edit answers – powers that were previously limited to admins, but which we can now give to more people. You can now post images and files in both questions and answers, so feel free to use screengrabs and code to help illustrate your points. Currently you can upload gif, png, jpg, jpeg, zip, tar.gz,pdf, txt, and XML files. If there are any others that are required, let me know in a reply to this post. You can now post questions directly to Facebook and Twitter. When you select ‘settings’ from the top navigation, you should now find a tab for social media, which will allow you to connect your Twitter and Facebook accounts – any questions you post can be posted straight to your accounts on these services. There may be some changes to badges, karma levels and response rates, as they are calculated slightly differently. If you see a very drastic change, please let us know. If you have any issues with the site update, please let us know on this post, or contact admin@ask.sqlservercentral.com. This is hopefully just a start to the site improvements – once we’re certain that everything is running smoothly we’ll see what else we can do.

Is the mail icon meaning that notifications are now going to hit that box instead of our email accounts? On the line of notifications I noticed that area under profile settings has changed...what does "A question in my area of expertise is posted" this mean? Where is my area of expertise determined? @Shawn_Melton It should just be for internal messaging - reply notifications should go straight to your email. Let me know if this isn't the case and I'll look into it.

Would it be possible to have the notifications go to this box, in place of our email address?

This is meant to be a comment but it appears that I have no way to add a comment to existing question and/or answer. Clicking on the add new comment simply refreshes the page and forces the scroll back to the top. Trying the same from compatibility view simply hides the add new comment link. I also have the same problem as Pavel, that is I only see zeroes for the number of votes. Also, if I opt to upvote some answer then I can see the actual number of votes for a split second but then the number quickly changes back to zero. The karma points of the person whom I upvoted don't get changed. Another problem is related to the badges, these appear to be seriously messed up. And finally, the users view page has changed to sort the users by karma vertically rather than horizontally, that is the seconed user appears in the leftmost column of the second row, the third user appears in the leftmost column of the third row, and 15th user appears in the middle of the first row(?!) which does not make any sense. Oleg Exactly the same behavior. Originally even after upgrade I was able to post comments and do everything from IE9. Only the problem with the "Code Sample" button which I have described in comment to the question. However now nearly nothing is working from within IE9 browser.

As far as we can tell, any problems with IE9 should be all fixed up. If they aren't, please let me know.

@matt 4 Not all problems though. The way the users are displayed on the users view page is still wrong (the items are sorted in the very weird vertical-top-down-and-then-next-row way). This is really annoying and not consistent with how the users are displayed on other sites, such as stackoverflow. Another problem which still persists (also on the users view page) is that the items overlap (Fatherjack's bronze badges number of 545 is partually blocked by me, and my rather too high bronze badges number is partually blocked by Tom Staab's icon).

On the main question list, the mouseover / tooltip / hover text - whatever you want to call it - has changed. It used to be the beginning of the body of the question - now it's just a repeat of the question heading, which is less useful.

It also feels as though the Comments fields have shrunk - I'm sure you used to be able to add more than 600 characters... @ThomasRushton What would be a good number? It's easily editable.

Oh, now you're going to ask me to remember what it actually was on the old platform. I have vague recollections that it was around 1200, but I could be wrong.

OK, I've changed it to that - if it looks like it's not going to be enough just shout and I'll set it a bit higher.

Thanks, @DaveC. Now, if only the other issues were as easily fixed...

Incidentally, @DaveC, the email notification I received about this came through saying it was a new answer, rather than a comment... The email said:

I can attest to the performance improvements (at least on my Touchpad).
You need to take a look at the FAQ and "About" pages, they are now empty.
As a final note, I'd just like to say "well done"! This is the best upgrade ASK has had so far, good communication ahead of the fact and a good summary after the fact. Please keep up the good work!
Good catch - I've updated those now. They're the same as before, but they'll slowly change to reflect new features as we start to properly implement them.
Is it no longer possible to see karma changes (the actual events, not the graph)?
It looks like the thresholds were changed. Bronze on a question used to be 10. Now it's 3. If we change those settings I think we'll see these insane numbers go away. It looks really silly.
Convert to comment missing? Before update there was possibility to convert an answer to a comment. It allowed convert answers posted by newbies to comments related to appropriate question/answer and helped clean the site. However now I do not see this possibility.
