How are you performing the backup? Are you using backup-software, a maintenance plan with a backup-task or "plain" T-SQL to create the backup? EDIT Which version of SQL Server? You say "System DB Backup". Which database do you mean? Master, MSDB, Model and TempDB are considered system databases. /EDIT

That sounds like a third party software backup failure. What software are you using to perform your backups?
