Urgent Help required The semaphore timeout period has expired. [SQLSTATE 08S01]

I am getting the following error for the sqlserver agent (SQL SERVER 2005 SP2).

[298] SQLServer Error: 121, TCP Provider: The semaphore timeout period has expired. [SQLSTATE 08S01] [298] SQLServer Error: 121, Communication link failure [SQLSTATE 08S01] [298] SQLServer Error: 16389, Communication link failure [SQLSTATE 08S01] [298] SQLServer Error: 258, Unable to complete login process due to delay in prelogin response [SQLSTATE 08001]

This set of error I am getting quite frequently.. This is a production Database..And I need provide the Root Cause of this problem as SQL Server Agent goes down with this error.

Not sure wheather it's related to the NIC/SAn or some network related problem.

Please help. Many thanks in advance.

It appears to be a network adapter issue. Check out this Microsoft Link - It addresses your error message

If you can pinpoint that the Network card is the issue and either updating the firmware or replacing the card solves the issue then that should prove as the root cause for your timeout issue, as to what caused the NIC to start causing this issue well 1) hardware fails, 2) it could be that the NIC is performing like it always has however increased traffic is hitting a new threshold on the NIC and it can't handle it 3) the NIC could be fine but someone changed the switch and you are now auto negotiating between full duplex and half, 4) etc. I would get a network or systems guy to test the interface.

New code box

There's a new way to format code on the site - the red speech bubble logo will automatically format T-SQL for you. The original code box is still there for XML, etc. More details here.
