We have installed SQL Express edition on our production server(SQL SEVER 2005). we need to upgrade to Work group edition. Is it possible to upgrade the production SQL Server to the work group edition? What are the risks?

Yes you can upgrade - have a detailed recovery plan in case it goes wrong which should include backups and a maintenance window when you can take the databases down.
