How to find or install Database Engine Tuning Advisor

I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my computer, but I'd like to use the Database Engine Tuning Advisor, which I've used with SQL Server 2005 before.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to install DETA, find the feature or add-on, or use this tool.

Nowhere in my Start > Programs menu is this tool, nor is there a menu option for it in my SSMS 2008 application.

How does one find, download, install, or add this application?

Are you using Express by any chance? If so, you won't find it as its not included in that release. Otherwise, you should see it both under Tools menu in Management Studio and also under the start menu in Performance Tools directory (this is for 2008).

Do you see the executable at Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\dta.exe ?

I am not using Express. I don't see dta.exe in that folder. I'm just trying to figure out how to add it in there.

  • which version of 2k8 you have installed?
  • are you a sysadmin on the server?
  • can you type a query, r-click in Mgmt Studio, and choose "Analyze Query in Database Engine..." ?

I do not get the option to "Analyze Query in Database Engine" in the query editor.
