Just a note about replication - it is not something to do blind via a step by step guide from the web. It can be quite a complicated beast to control and needs more than a wizard to replicate data with any sort of reliability in production.

I suggest you read up on the replication mechanism as a whole and then take the next steps in setting up replication:

The basics step are:

  • Setup a publisher (the server where data is being replicated from)
  • Setup a distributor (the server that handles moving the data from publisher to subscriber ***** )
  • Setup a publication (group of db objects to replicate - tables, views etc.)
  • Setup a subscriber (the server(s) that will recieve the replicated data
  • Create the initial snapshot (at some point in time when the publisher will not feel the load)
  • Wait for publisher and subscriber to get in synch
  • Be amazed at the whole process actually working!

There are many parts that I have missed out of the list above, but if you read up on replication first and try it out on a testbed, you will see how it all fits together.

@Cyborg - definitely. I would hope that reading up on the architecture would lead ramesh to read up on monitoring and troubleshooting too.

New code box

There's a new way to format code on the site - the red speech bubble logo will automatically format T-SQL for you. The original code box is still there for XML, etc. More details here.
