Who will get the first Gold badge?

We've recently seen Bob and Ben get Silver badges, but who will get the first Gold badge, and what will it be for?

Current runnings: Famous Question (10,000 views) Current leaders only on 2k views. Not likely. Great Q/A Still no silver 'Good Q/A' awarded yet. Not likely. Stellar Q No silver 'Famous' awarded yet. Not likely. Populist Only 5 'Nice Answers', and no 'Good Answers' yet. Not likely. Looks like the first will be the Fanatic badge. Shame...

I will award the bounty on this question to the first person who can answer this with a "Me!", if you have a Gold badge that is not the Fanatic badge (ie, one that you have earned by being clever).

...but as bounties expire after a week, I will wait until someone has such a Gold badge. Then I will put a bounty of 500 points on this question!

5 answers: sort voted first

I suspect it's about 80 days out when someone passes 100 straight days.

I hope you're wrong. I'd like to see the site catch on and a popular badge be assigned. Like the 100-upvote badges, for example.

That would be beter, I agree, but I'm still standing by my bet.

Me! Hahaha. And Blackhawk-17... we both got Fanatic for 100 days straight.

regardless of the reasons - congrats to both Rob and Greg (Blackhawk-17) on the first golds. Christmas Day AND New Years Day - that's hardcore!

Dang! I still dont have a Gold badge over at StackOverflow. And my measely two silver badges took forever to get. :-(

And the Enthusiast and Fanatic badges are a lot harder to get than you might think, because its not at all clear how they measure it, but I've been on SO every day for waaayy more than 30 days and I still don't have it. I think it has to do with what time of day the measure from one day to the next, but it's sure not Midnight to Midnight for MY timezone.

One thing that I should point out is that the ability to get Silver badges, and Gold badges even more, is largely an issue of Volume. Not our volume of Answers, but the volume of Voters who read your Answers. For instance at StackOverflow (SO), most of my correct answers for SQL questions get about 1/4 the votes that the second and third wrong answers do for C, C#, C++, or Java questions. And that's entirely because that community outnumbers the SQL community there by about 10 to 1.

What that means for us here at SSC is that in order to get those badges we need to

  1. Get more users here, so that they can vote, and,

  2. Vote more ourselves.

I have two silvers at StackOverflow. One is the Fanatic badge (for 30 days straight), and the other is for a question that has over 80 up-votes http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1176011/sql-to-determine-minimum-sequential-days-of-access/1176255#1176255. If I get to 100, that's Gold. Also if I beat the accepted answer by 2x, I get a Gold one for that. They're rare though.

I just voted for you, Barry. Anything to help out.

"Badges? We don't need no steenking badges!"

Sorry, I'm an old movie buff... it's a bad habit.

However, I am quite tickled by my "Enlightened" badge.
I've spent all day virtually polishing it.

But, I'm betting Grant has called the shot. He gets my vote.

Yes, but which old movie are you quoting. The original or the comedy that quoted the original?
Oct 26, 2009 at 09:57 AM Grant Fritchey ♦♦
"Blazing Saddles", the comedy that (mis)quoted the original "Treasure of the Sierra Madre."

I think it will be a close run thing...

I think 'Great Question' will most likely be awarded to Steve - he has asked some really thoughtful & useful seeders which I am sure will get voted up as the site gains traction.

I think 'Great Answer' will most likely go to either Grant or Bob - because the quality of their answers is second to none.

I think one of the competitions will get a 'Famous Question' or 'Stellar Question' - there were over 1000 views on competition 1, and the site hasn't really got up to a huge number of users yet. I'm not sure, though, if you can get those badges on a Communiti Wiki question...

Not so sure about that one. I think Bob Hovios' answers are excellent and are very likely to get voted up into the heavens.

Ahhh modesty the mark of a true gent. :)

As they say down here, "Even a blind squirrel finds some nuts."

Grant is one of the many people who have taught me a great deal since I started visiting SSC. I read anything written by him with great respect.

But I am very pleased that you guys approve of the quality of my answers, because I genuinely want to help get this site to get off to a good start.

I wasn't aware there was a gold one. My money's on Matt, however. He seems to be the leader here.

I think the key to getting a Gold badge is having an answer that is really popular. Matt is prolific, but Bob got his silver for a 10-vote answer. Matt's best so far is only 6.

New code box

There's a new way to format code on the site - the red speech bubble logo will automatically format T-SQL for you. The original code box is still there for XML, etc. More details here.
