No one can tell you how to become a DBA in a forum post. The topic is huge. My suggestion, get several books. The first is Craig Mullins "Database Administration." It's a great overview of the topic. The next is "DBA Survivor" by Tom Larock. It's a bunch of awesome advice for how to deal with the issues you're going to run into as a DBA. Also, I recommend "How to Become an Exceptional DBA" by Brad McGehee. It's another overview of the job, detailing lots of necessary skills and knowledge with a very SQL Server focus.

Those are all the general knowledge guides you should look into. As far as the technical side of things, it really depends on what you're doing. But, if you're just getting started, a book I helped co-write could be useful, "Beginning SQL Server Administration".

I agree with Grant's answer. I would also recommend having a look at www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com - in the SQL Server section you have a jumpstart course for SQL Server administration. You won't learn how to administer databases by just looking at these six videos. I wouldn't even say they are exceptionally good. But they provide a nice "Table of Contents" of an extremely large topic.

New code box

There's a new way to format code on the site - the red speech bubble logo will automatically format T-SQL for you. The original code box is still there for XML, etc. More details here.
